Hanging History: How We Put the World’s Largest Canadian Flag on Grouse Mountain

Hanging History: How We Put the World’s Largest Canadian Flag on Grouse Mountain

There are projects that keep you up at night because of the deadlines, and then there are projects that keep you up because of the sheer scale of the dream.

Seeing a massive, vibrant Canadian flag stretched across the face of Grouse Mountain this morning was one of those moments where the world just stops for a second.

What started as an ambitious, "what if" conversation turned into one of the most technically challenging, high-stakes projects our team at Blast Media Print has ever produced. When Adam Rootman asked if we could produce the world's largest Canadian Flag, we didn't just see a massive print job—we saw a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to build something unforgettable for our city.

And Blast knew we had to do it, at all costs.

Scale Like Vancouver Has Never Seen

To understand the sheer magnitude of this project, you have to look at the numbers. This isn't just a big flag; it’s a engineering marvel:

  • 160 meters long by 80 meters tall.

  • The equivalent size of two full football fields stacked together.

  • Thousands upon thousands of square feet of specialized, weather-resistant fabric.

We didn't just build this to be big; we built it to be visible. Right now, as the eyes of the world are on Vancouver for the FIFA World Cup, this flag stands as a beacon of pride. It is perfectly positioned to be seen from BC Place clear across the inlet to the Freedom Mobile Arch, stretching all the way to Burnaby and Richmond.

Whether you’re a local commuting to work, a visitor arriving for the matches, or a fan cheering on Team Canada, you cannot miss it. It’s the world’s best flag, on the world’s most visible mountain, in the world’s most beautiful city.

Precision, Sleepless Nights, and Absolute Ingenuity

Putting something the size of two football fields onto the side of a mountain isn't just about printing fabric—it’s about intense logistics, heavy physics, and precision at every single stage.

This project demanded long days, late nights, and a crew that genuinely cared about getting it right. When you are dealing with mountain elements, safety and responsibility are everything. It required a level of ingenuity our team has never had to tap into before.

This achievement belongs to an incredible group of people who poured their hearts into making it happen. We are so thankful to our incredible partners at Grouse Mountain, Kevin Smith and Chad Pilmer, and the team at Blast Media Print for the countless late-night calls, the sleepless nights, and the sheer hard work they put into making this happen safely.

Why We Do What We Do

To see it now, standing tall and overlooking the entire Lower Mainland, is honestly pretty emotional.

This wasn’t just about a print installation. This was about creating something meaningful that represents pride in our country, pride in our city, and pride in what can happen when great partners come together to push the boundaries of what’s possible.

Supporting Team Canada on the global stage during the World Cup, leading right into Canada Day, is exactly what drives me to run this business every single day.

This is a milestone our team will take with us forever. If you're out and about in the Lower Mainland this week, look up at the mountain. We built that for Vancouver, and we couldn't be prouder.
