Community, Connection, and Celebration: A Look Back at Our Night with Special Olympics BC

Community, Connection, and Celebration: A Look Back at Our Night with Special Olympics BC

Anicia Louie |

Every so often, an evening comes along that reminds us why community engagement is so vital. Recently, the BLAST Media Print team had the honor of attending and sponsoring an inspiring event hosted by Special Olympics British Columbia (SOBC)—and to say it was an unforgettable night would be an understatement.

From hearing powerful stories of perseverance to celebrating the athletes who define the spirit of sport, the energy in the room was truly electric.

An Unforgettable Host: Daniel Thomas

One of the undeniable highlights of the evening was meeting Special Olympics athlete Daniel Thomas, who took the stage as the Master of Ceremonies.

Stepping into the MC role is no small feat, but Daniel commanded the room with effortless charisma, quick wit, and infectious enthusiasm. His energy set the tone for the entire night, keeping the crowd engaged, laughing, and inspired from start to finish.

Meaningful Connections Beyond the Office

What made Daniel’s turn at the mic even more meaningful for us was a personal connection close to home.

At BLAST, we take immense pride in what our team does both on the clock and out in the community. Our very own Josh Thorvaldsen dedicates his personal time as a volunteer coach for Special Olympics curling—and as it turns out, Daniel is one of the athletes on Josh’s team. Watching that coach-athlete bond shine on such a celebratory stage was a touching reminder of how small—and deeply connected—our community really is.

Alongside Josh, BLAST was proudly represented by Hallie Moher, who joined in cheering on Daniel and the rest of the SOBC community.

Great Company for a Great Cause

Events like this are elevated by the people you share them with. We had the pleasure of sharing a table with our friends from Blackfin Sports Group. A huge thank-you to James Douglas, Chris Beardsmore, and Chris Gear for the fantastic conversation, camaraderie, and shared commitment to supporting local sports initiatives.

We also want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Megan Pollock and Karen Reid, whose tireless efforts behind the scenes made the event run seamlessly and ensured our team could be part of something so special.

Looking Ahead

Special Olympics BC creates life-changing opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities, fostering inclusion, confidence, and lifelong friendships through the transformative power of sport.

To the athletes, volunteers, and organizers at SOBC: congratulations on a world-class event. BLAST Media Print is proud to stand behind your mission, and we look forward to continuing our support for years to come.
